MY HEART STOOD STILL
by Erroll Garner with John Simmons, Shadow Wilson

These recordings document a series of New York studio sessions by Erroll Garner with bassist John Simmons and drummer Shadow Wilson, recorded between June 1950 and January 1951.

The first session took place on June 28, 1950, at Columbia's 30th Street Studio in New York. Six titles from the session appeared that year on Columbia CL 6139, Piano Moods, including “When Johnny Comes Marching Home,” “It Could Happen to You,” “I Don't Know Why,” “When You're Smiling,” “Long Ago and Far Away,” and “Spring Is Here.” Two additional recordings from the session, “My Heart Stood Still” and “Poor Butterfly,” were released later.

On October 7, 1950, Garner, Simmons, and Wilson returned to the studio for another session. The recordings included “The Petite Waltz,” “The Petite Waltz Bounce,” “Lover,” “How High the Moon,” and “People Will Say We're in Love.” “The Petite Waltz” and “The Petite Waltz Bounce” were first issued on Columbia 39043 in late 1950, followed by “Lover” and “People Will Say We're in Love” on Columbia 3-39100. “How High the Moon” was released later, appearing on Encores in Hi-Fi (Columbia CL 1141) in 1958.

The final session in this series took place on January 11, 1951, again at Columbia's 30th Street Studio. Several of the recordings were issued on Piano Gems (Columbia CL 6173) in 1951, while others appeared on later Columbia albums, including Gone Garner Gonest (1955) and After Midnight (1956).

These sessions capture Garner in a piano-bass-drums setting during the early years of his Columbia recording career. The performances combine his melodic approach to repertoire with the flexible rhythmic interaction of Simmons and Wilson, across standards, popular songs, and Garner's own compositions.
